Schedule of Whitworth's response to Oct. 21 WBC demonstration

Following is Whitworth’s response (developed and endorsed collaboratively by the university and AWSU) to the demonstration Westboro Baptist Church has announced for 12:30-1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21. It is our hope that the activities below will present a clear and unified demonstration of love and respect for all members of the Whitworth community.

In addition to these scheduled activities, we encourage students, faculty and staff to wear red clothing all day on Thursday to show our solidarity in lifting up the values of Whitworth University.

Wednesday, Oct. 20:
  • All day: Prepare a large banner to present during the demonstration as a visible sign of Whitworth’s opposition to the WBC message. The banner will be available in the HUB throughout Wednesday, Oct. 20, for people to sign and write messages.
  • 9:45 p.m.: Gather in the chapel the night before the protest for a prayer vigil to ask God to work through us for His glory.

Thursday, Oct. 21:
  • Show our solidarity by wearing red clothing throughout the day.
  • 11-11:30 a.m.: Chapel service in Seeley Mudd Chapel. The service will be devoted to prayer, singing – led by the Gospel Choir – and communion. People are invited to take part as they are able.
  • 11 a.m.-1 p.m.:“Love Run (Or Walk)” fundraiser at Boppell Track to raise money for the YMCA and YWCA of Spokane. Students, faculty and staff are invited to come to the Whitworth track any time between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and walk or run in honor of a worthy cause. Those unable to run/walk can cheer from the stands. Pledge forms are available in the HUB this week for participants to use to get sponsors. Collection buckets also will be available at the track on Thursday.
  • 12:30-1 p.m.: ASWU leaders, representing the student body, as well as faculty and staff representatives will present the signed banner during the WBC demonstration. Banner-holders will receive prior training in non-violent demonstration and will commit to not engaging the WBC protesters directly.
Whether the protesters show up or not, and regardless of what they say, this is an opportunity for us to affirm together our deepest community commitments. Whitworth students have demonstrated tremendous leadership in outlining a plan that rallies the campus community around our mission to honor God, follow Christ and serve humanity. And there’s never a bad reason to lift up the mission.

Human Resource Services: Tips for submitting HRA claims; Health screenings and diabetes presentation; Register for Fall Break training

HRA Tips and Forms for Submitting Medical/Dental Claims:

If you are covered by Whitworth’s CORE medical plan through Group Health, you can learn about the HRA reimbursement process by visiting the following link:
http://www.whitworth.edu/Administration/HumanResources/Benefits&Wellness/Index.htm.

Once there, click on the Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) link in the Medical/Dental Benefits list for helpful information on how to log into the Flex Plan Services site, how to process your claims and claim forms.

Did you know?
  • If you have made a co-pay or Rx purchase and want to receive reimbursement from your HRA account, you don’t need an EOB (explanation of benefits) to process that co-pay and Rx purchase through our third-party administrator, Flex Plan Services. You simply need your receipt.
  • You MUST have an EOB to process any medical claims. You will find a copy of your EOB at this link that you can download from the Group Health site. http://www.ghc.org/
  • You may submit non-covered dental bills for reimbursement for the 2010-11 plan year.
  • You may also submit eyeglass or contact lens payments for reimbursement through your HRA. For dental and eye coverage reimbursements you should submit an itemized receipt or billing.
Once you have reviewed the HRA information provided, please contact JoAnn Fox at x4413 if you have any questions or difficulty in processing your reimbursements.

Meet Your Colleague: A Q&A with Assistant Professor of Political Science Andy Hogue

Name: Andy Hogue

Job title: Assistant Professor

Department: Political Science

How long have you worked at Whitworth? One year

What do you like best about your job? Like most folks around here, the opportunity to work with some great students. And I get to spend my days talking, reading and writing about something I love and feel called to do. Not a bad gig.

In what ways do your gifts and abilities help meet the needs of the campus community you serve? I hope I’m okay at teaching and mentoring students. I sure enjoy it, anyway.

Favorite book: Am I a huge nerd if I say Madison, Hamilton, & Jay’s The Federalist? Okay, then how about Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird.

Favorite movie: It certainly depends on the mood, but “Rushmore” and “The Shawshank Redemption” are always near the top.

Favorite food: There's nothing I won’t eat, but the longer I’m away, the more I love the distinct foods of my previous homes. That’s Southern cooking in general, but especially shrimp & grits and South Carolina pork barbecue (mustard base, of course, but I won’t turn down vinegar). Then Texas taught me to love some authentic Tex-Mex.

Favorite quote: “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Favorite music: This is a hard one for a music lover with eclectic tastes, but my all-time favorites include David Wilcox, Van Morrison and The Indigo Girls

Favorite animal: Big, playful dogs

Guilty pleasure: College football. Is it bad for a political scientist to read the daily news about Clemson Tiger football before the daily news about politics?

Hobbies: Outside stuff (running, backpacking, skiing, gardening), music, cooking and spending time with my family

Best vacation ever: My wife and I spent a week on the north shore of Kauai shortly before our first daughter was born. An excellent time.

Birth place: Cleveland, Tenn.

We’d be surprised to know that…I usually run a marathon a year, with the Spokane Marathon up next this fall.

I collect…books.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Somewhere in Africa with my kids while they’re still at a very formative age (but don’t get me wrong, Fiji sounds nice, too)

If you could try anything and not fail, what dream would you attempt? Today, I think I might be a farmer, Wendell Berry-style.

What is your favorite sound? It’s pretty great to hear my two little girls make each other laugh. And good live music, too.

If the whole world was listening, what would you say? “All you need is love. Love is all you need.”

Favorite childhood book: I can’t recall this one from my own childhood, but my favorite kids’ book since becoming a parent is without a doubt Robert McCloskey’s Time of Wonder.

Favorite childhood TV show:The Brady Bunch”

Least favorite word: None comes to mind, but my whole life I’ve been pretty, um, particular about grammar (as my students certainly might second)

If you could go on a road trip with anyone (from the past or present), who would you choose and where would you go? In college I had an annual tradition called “Random Roadtrip,” in which anywhere from 7-15 friends and I picked a truly random location no closer than 10 hours away for a Friday night to Sunday afternoon road trip. Destinations included the likes of Graceland, Colonial Williamsburg, Medieval Times (the Dallas location, for the sole reason that, despite having one 13 hours closer, it, unlike others, had a moat), you get the picture. Given the choice of a road trip with anyone to anywhere, I’d reconvene Random Roadtrip with the original cast – destination not terribly important.

Best high school class subjects: Social studies, history, and government (shocking, I know)
