Whitworth faculty and staff members are invited and encouraged to attend one of two upcoming town hall meetings to learn about and provide feedback on a draft vision and strategic plan for Whitworth’s future.
The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 1, from noon-1:30 p.m., in Weyerhaeuser Hall, Room 111. The second meeting will take place on Thursday, March 10, from 3:30-5 p.m. in Weyerhaeuser Hall’s Robinson Teaching Theatre. Employees, in consultation with their supervisors, may attend one of the meetings as work time. President Beck Taylor will moderate discussion at both meetings and other members of the University Council will be available to field questions.
The plan outlines a vision for what Whitworth will be in the year 2021 and a set of strategic goals and objectives for how to achieve that vision over the next 10 years. Faculty and staff provided valuable input into the planning process through meetings, surveys and discussions with University Council members in the fall. Since then, the University Council has developed a draft plan that is now ready to be shared with Whitworth’s students, staff and faculty, as well as with alumni, parents, donors, community members and other constituencies.
In addition to the town hall meetings, feedback can be provided through University Council members, an online survey that will be available in early March, and by e-mailing Greg Orwig at gorwig@whitworth.edu.

New Rates for Tuition, Room, Board and Fees
The university is sending a letter this week to returning students about next year’s new rate structure for tuition, room, board and fees. The rate structure reflects a total combined increase of 6.2 percent, assuming a double room and a traditional meal plan. We recognize that increases in our tuition and other charges can create challenges for our students and their families. In the letter, we encourage students facing financial difficulties to meet with staff in our financial aid and/or student accounting services offices to discuss their circumstances and options. Please encourage students to access these resources if you believe they will be helpful.
The new rate structure reflects a number of considerations. The large 2009-10 incoming class intensified the need for expanding residence hall, dining, recreation and intramural space for students; planning is underway on these important projects. We also are hiring a number of faculty members in order to maintain our low student-to-faculty ratio that is so important to the teaching and learning experience at Whitworth.
This fall, we will open Robinson Science Hall with state-of-the-art laboratories, instrumentation and research facilities for biology and chemistry students. This building adds significant costs to the university’s operations, but it is vitally important for serving the 50 percent increase in science majors Whitworth has seen over the past decade. In addition, our draft 2011-2021 strategic plan calls for a variety of exciting initiatives that will enrich and expand educational opportunities for our students and prepare them to succeed in careers or graduate school.
Enclosed with the letter was a chart showing Whitworth’s tuition compared to 13 other private colleges and universities in the Northwest. Whitworth’s 2010-11 tuition was 90.5 percent of the average of these schools and lags several of our top cross-application schools.

Marisha Hamm Reporting Change
Marisha Hamm, the university’s environmental health and safety officer, will begin reporting directly to Brian Benzel, vice president for finance and administration. Marisha will continue to work closely with Facility Services, but the new reporting structure will more clearly communicate the campus-wide nature of her safety, environmental and risk management responsibilities.
“It is our goal to serve students, faculty and staff by continuing to make health, safety and risk management responsibilities a high priority,” Brian Benzel says. Marisha’s office will relocate to the chapel until a more permanent location is determined. Whitworth Campus Security will remain located within Facility Services.

Announcing Whitworth's New Lindaman Chair: Julia Stronks
Dear Whitworth Faculty and Staff,
I am pleased to announce that the Lindaman Chair Search Committee has recommended that Dr. Julia Stronks, professor of political science, serve as Whitworth University’s next Lindaman Chair. Beck Taylor and I have accepted this recommendation and look forward to Julia’s tenure beginning in the fall of 2011.
Julia already has a distinguished career as a scholar, teacher, and institutional servant. The committee was particularly impressed with her interdisciplinary interest in political science, law, public education, theology, and justice. Her passion for teaching and her extensive publishing record across these disciplines bear witness to her stated commitment “to engage in a speaking/writing agenda that brings together the rich history of the Reformed tradition and Christian voices of other traditions – emphasizing what we have in common and what we can learn from each other.”
I believe that Julia will use this chair well to raise the profile of these important faith and learning issues across the country, in the region, and at Whitworth. When you see her, please give her your warmest congratulations.
I also want to thank the faculty committee members, Dale Soden, Kathy Storm, and Barb Sanders, for their excellent work on this important selection. I also thank our four faculty applicants. One of the ways each of us can help improve our air quality is by using an alternative to driving alone to work. Public Health Position Opening on Clean Air Advisory Council
Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency (Spokane Clean Air) has an immediate opening on its volunteer Advisory Council. People interested in local air quality issues with a background in the public health field are encouraged to apply.
The role of the eight-member Advisory Council is to provide counsel and input on agency programs and regulations that are designed to carry out the purposes of the Washington Clean Air Act.
Successful candidates must be Spokane County residents, have an interest in local air quality issues, and a background in the field of public health. Interested and qualified applicants may apply for the position by submitting a letter of interest to Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency Attn: William Dameworth, Director, 3104 E. Augusta Ave., Spokane, WA 99207, by March 1, 2011. The letter should describe the applicant's experience and give a brief explanation of his or her interest in air quality issues.
